The coffee and keynote by Samia Sami titled “Engineering a Sustainable Future: Inspiring the Next Generation ” was presented November 25th, 2023. (Watch it on Inspiration Corner, on Let’s Talk Science’s Learning Pathways).
Another Cup of Coffee and Keynote is hosted and recorded on Treaty 4 territory, Regina and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the traditional territory of the lands of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anishinabek/Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakota, Lakota, and is on the homeland of the Métis Nation.
Our guest, Samia Sami, joined us from Treaty 6 territory, the traditional lands of the Metis and Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuline (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Saulteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) peoples. Samia also wanted us to honour and acknowledge Treaty 8 territory (where she works) and all of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples who have lived, traveled and gathered on these lands for thousands of years

Coffee and a Keynote Session Description
- Samia Sami is helping to engineer a better future, combining her passion for the environment with a love of design and technology. As one of Canada's Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 and Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders, she joins us to bring her expertise in engineering and sustainability to discuss real-world examples of how innovation is transforming industries and communities. Samia will also discuss the importance of early exposure of youth to engineering concepts and how educational choices can lead to future pathways.
About the Speaker:
- Samia is an electrical engineer with experience in sustainable energy, electricity grids, and engineering design. She works for Electric Power Engineers, where she executes power system studies to connect renewable technologies to the grid. Samia has used artificial intelligence to predict the security status of renewable microgrids in remote communities. She has also used a data-driven approach to improve the observability of solar-integrated distribution systems. Samia serves on the Board of Directors of The Starfish Canada, empowering young environmental leaders. She has served as the Chair of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter. Samia is one of Canada's Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 and Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders.
